Because the average American at the time was exceeding 3-4 drinks a day daily. They drank in the morning before work, during breaks at work, after work before going home and then at home. Beating on your family became a national pass time and a lot of victims got together and pinned all the dysfunctionality on alcohol. We were becoming/still are a nation of drunks.
