The Bolshevik Red Guards were disarmed (!) and Lenin again went into hiding!Then at the end of August 1917 prime minister Kerensky (of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, mind you) ordered Col. Kornilov back to Petrograd with his regiment to neutralize the Bolsheviks once and for all.After Kornilov set off from the Baltics, Kerensky suddenly had a change of mind and started to fear Kornilov could oust him in a coup once he arrived, a fear that mounted once Kornilov stopped replying to Kerensky's letters while en route. So what did he do? He re-armed the bolsheviks (!) and even went as far as having the railroad workers dismantle the train tracks leading to Petrograd to disturb Kornilov's advance. On the approach to Petrograd, lacking support, the confused Kornilov abandoned the effort. He was arrested while Alexander Krymov, the commander under him, committed suicide.
