I’m a landlord and I barely make any profit. 1.4 million dollar town house> rent is a measly 5500 per month.taxes 25,000 a year. Insurance 5000. Maintenance is at least 5 grand. The return on investment is atrocious but i dont know what else to do with the money.

It forced people to abandon their town and move to the cities. Putting upward pressure on rent and downward pressure on (real) wages in cities. Many of the "empty" houses are in places with no jobs.Real estate price inflation is also fueled by money printing (or processes that are pretty much equivalent to money printing). If you can create unlimited money to loan to people to buy real estate (instead of productive investments), you have to compete with those buyers and prices go up. So banks loan more money for it. Vicious circle. And then people and bank invest in real estate and use it as collateral for more loans, etc. Many say it's a "bubble". I don't know what it is desu and I don't know if it'll "pop" somehow, but clearly there's a systemic issue with a giant part of the economy not being backed by "real" wealth or productivity and I don't think this will end well. Whether it happens all at once, or we suffer the consequences for a century, or miraculously the system will actually get fixed, I don't know.
