I think people overstate the differences between Trotsky and Stalin, people talk about Trotsky like he was some socdem who would have been less authoritarian than Stalin. The truth is Trotsky would have probably been just as extreme as Stalin, with the exception being he would have dedicated himself to exporting the revolution instead of the socialism in one country shit that Stalin tried.
