People with nothing to lose, people who believe in something, but nobody wants to be tortured to death. But it's important that you do actually kill them. And sacrificing the guarantee that they actually do die, to make them suffer a bit more is risking the chance that YOU are going to be in their place next, or even worse that this person is going to come back. If you wanted someone beaten but not killed, that would be a different job. If someone needs to die, it's better they die painlessly, then suffer and not die.
