The current normal is for women to have 1 child in their late 30s, followed by a divorce. It doesn't take a math professor to understand that this will quickly lead to extinction. Humans actually evolved to have far more kids, more than 10 per woman, due to the high mortality rates of the past. But 3 would be the bare minimum to invert the demographic collapse, or at least maintain the population stable.
