I’m leaving the hospital after spending almost 6 weeks in a burn unit for a fire accident at my house. I was cooking a steak on a skillet and a fire broke out. Like any reasonable person I tried to douse it in water but literally the entire place then just caught on fire. I tried to roll on the ground (LIKE WHAT WE ARE TAUGHT) but it literally did nothing. If anything it just spread the flames.Anyways. Now after skin grafts on more than 40 percent of my body can I just ask? WHO came up with these fire safety rules!? THEY DONT WORK. And who I sue to cover my 300k hospital bill?

I legit used to be a firefighter and actually used to do presentations to kids on what you should do. The only thing that will help is to SMOTHER the fire with a blanket or jacket but this often requires a helper who themselves is not on fire. If you are both on fire just smother each other. Also water of course will work. Even splashing water on yourself from the sink could work but honestly you likely won't have water on standby and again works better with a helper. If you are alone, and on fire. Try to strip naked. Sure you might burn your hands a little but you are literally on fire. Once the clothes are off your skin won't burn and hair is much harder to burn than TV makes you think. Stripping is the best bet if alone, water and blanket smother if you have a helper or your friend catches on fire. Honestly proper fire safety saves more lives than anything. A proper in service fire extinguisher hanging on the wall in the kitchen and other high fire danger areas is ideal. Just grab, hold your breath, mag dump the extinguisher on yourself. I have a specific fire blanket and a small extinguisher the size of a large hairspray can within reach of my bed.
