But again, one could have seen this coming, as existence of a semi-autonomous region within China is incompatible with its domestic policy.It looks like now the push to reunify with China will not come as much from China itself, but rather from the interplay of the growing tensions in the Pacific, US increasing isolation and ally mismanagement and China's own gradual increase of military posture in the Asi-Pacific. In other words, Taiwan would be persuaded to reunify not because it would want to be with China that much, but rather because it would be too risky to continue this balancing between dependence and independence policy. Bottomline is though - China is in no way incentivized to rush this, let alone try to accomplish this militaristically. All they need is to wait for a single opportunity to reunify and after that there is no reversing this. A moment like this could come in a few years, or in decades, who knows. A few decades are but a moment in the lifespan of the Chinese civilization.
