when i was learning german i thought they were definitely more fascinating. but if you talk to east germans they were like universally saying it was a horrible police state 1984 poverty hell and even today its still underdeveloped which is crazy because east germany was like the most successful Warsaw Pact country. Richest economy in all of the soviet bloc. But still, it's not saying much. In GDR, you could have a car, but you would have to wait up to 20 years.

The second it became clear the USSR wouldn't deploy tanks the people themselves rose up and forced reform. It's quite funny, I was watching interviews with old dissidents in Romania, and one thing they seethed about was being locked into shit "menial" jobs for the rest of their lives due to their politics.
