Chernobyl is still uninhabitable because of the radiation released and will be for decades if not centuries to come.The Japanese mass resettled Nagasaki only 5 years after it was supposedly nuked.In fact by 1950 there was a HIGHER population living in Nagasaki than there had been in 1945, despite supposed high radiation levels and thousands of people supposedly killed.

Nagasaki and Hiroshima are a large part of the reason we know dose and distance effects of nuclear radiation exposure. Dropping those bombs introduced new elements into the world such as cesium as they are exclusively fission product. Anywhere you find cesium levels you can assume has been near either a nuclear explosion or reactor leak. Everyone in Europe knew Chernobyl happened because there was a massive wave of cesium in the air just violating your lungs. So where were the tests? Somewhere really far away because you have 3 methods of mitigating exposure, time, shielding and distance. Moving these out into the deserts and into the ocean were the most responsible way to test these weapons. Better over the ocean as every 2 foot of water will attenuate radiation levels to a tenth of their initial value. A lot of nuclear seems fake because it's like electricity, largely invisible, undetectable by the senses, and happens well below the microsecond range.
