It seems to me the West's morality and honor was shattered by WW2. You never heard about MK-ULTRA type experiments or government-sponsored drug smuggling prior to 1950. It seemed no action was off the table, and if the action taken would have been perceived as immoral by the public of the times, it was done in secret by the CIA. Ex-CIA agents, many of them ww2 veterans, on their deahtbeds as early at the 70s would recall the CIA was rotten to the core, and the more corrupt you were the higher you were promoted by Director Allen Dulles. He carefully created a mafia-like shadow government that had people at famous newspapers, news networks, and was friends with the executives of Americas top industry leaders. For instance the CIA overthrew the democratically elected president of Gutemala in 1954 so an American fruit company could monopolize their fruit industry after he passed land reforms that threatened their control, which led to decades of instability and violence. Since then we've only had glimpses into that shadow world with scandals such as the MK-ULTRA project, whos existence we only know of due to some financial records escaping destruction and being found in a warehouse in 1977. The subsequent Congressional investigations of course found nothing wrong and it was quickly dismissed by a panel appointed by insiders. To believe that these projects and activities have simply halted is naive in the extreme. I fear if the public knew the full extent of the truth of what government-sponsored activities are carried out in secret there would be violent rioting in the streets and possibly even a civil war tomorrow.
