Off the top of my head I believe they are just a figurehead, much like the president, who seemingly makes big decisions. But let's say the CEO hires a head of marketing, the CMO, who does something stupid and wastes millions, then it was indirectly the CEO's fault. And the board of directors can remove the CEO.Even if this particular CEO were not shot and killed, he could have been fired, retired, etc. CEOs step down or get replaced all the time. Sometimes they stay despite doing a bad job. Our society runs on made up rules, and the CEO role was hyped up in recent decades.
