Which culture was more of a civilizational lighthouse for the rest of humanity? The Greeks or the Romans?Lately I've come to prefer the Greeks. I neglected them for almost 20 years of my life, seeing them as sterile compared to the Romans. How wrong I was.
>>533793861And what of good solonius?
>he fell for literally the oldest trick in the bookwelcome to the team fren
>>533793861WTF is Rome supposed to have done?Hard mode: anything that wasn't fucking embarrassing.
I mean okay their military engineering was top notch.Anything else? Military engineering is literally the one sole thing that made Rome work occasionally.
I follow only Ottomans.
both had their strengths: Romans were superior in warfare, politics and law while greeks owned the rest
>>533793861Don't make me choose, I love both. Especially Archaic Greece and Late Antiquity Rome
>>533794264>>533794280>>533794967>>533795046>>533795222As a source of inspiration, Greece is unparalleled. Rome pales in comparison.
Even the likes of Japan are/were more impactful than Rome in terms of culture and philosophy. China blows them out of the fucking water. In fact China is decent competition for the Greeks, but one has to put it into perspective: Greece is a tiny mountainous shithole in constant civil war, yet they were way advanced in the classical period. China has always been fucking massive, and while their achievements were equally massive it's not as disproportionate as Greek achievement, and mostly concentrated in later periods. Ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians also have their perks, but became irrelevant fairly early on, hardly anything to account for after the Greek Golden Age.>how does western science and technology measure up to this?Certainly impressive on the technology side, decent on social organisation, and while some noteable philosophy came out of Western Europe 80% is absolute bottom tier garbage that shouldn't have been written.
>>533795360Greeks were like 2000 years ahead of their time in several fields - that's true. But so was Roman law. But I agree in general. Ancient Greek is the singularity of human history.
>>533793861The Greeks. They invented philosophy and mathematics. The Romans did nothing with those two things. The Romans were great engineers, but engineering doesn't interest me as much as philosophy and mathematics.
>>533793861How many Greek mathematicians were there vs Roman? That should answer your question. Plato's theory of forms, Aristotle's logic, etc. Rome was just good at war.
>>533793861Greece is easier to romanticize but the answer is Rome.
>>533795850They engineered with the mathematics and philosophy anon, you answered your own statement there
>>533793861>these based ancient Romans and Greeks!ugh...Both are a figment of our "historians" imagination. They didn't exist. History ain't completely fake and gay, no, but these two are the most made up shit ever. The last two millenia are about half as long.If you think the bible is fake (it is!), why believe in a different form of slop?
>>533795553>Ancient Greek is the singularity of human history.Amén.
>>533793861The Greeks had the most influence on European philosophy and religion, the Romans had more on politics and law, Germanics had the biggest impact on language, tactics and technology and Celtic/pre Indo European peoples most influenced Europe's genetics.
>>533795432>Greece is a tiny mountainous shithole in constant civil war,It's probably one of the reasons they've developed the way they did.Greek success can hardly be understated. Philosophy did not develop anywhere else before.
>>533795850it's hard to tell. Repubic Romans had their hands full catching up, sure. However later on there had been substantial developments in philosophy for example, which ultimately lay the groundwork for christianity and islam. but one could rightfully agrue, that the leading minds were greeks at heart who just happened to live in the Roman empire; most of the time they didn't even used the latin language. Romans were smart enough to incorporate almost anything greek had to offer. In a way Romans are the heirs of greek culture, who add their own flavour
>>533793861GreeksThey had medicine, mathematics, and philosophy And butt sex!
>>533793861Julio Claudian dynasty was jewed from the getgo.don't know enough about ancient greece to weigh in on their JQ
>>533795951Yeah math is nice and all, but it gives little back when someone more powerful puts a gladius through your lungsI'd give credit to the Romans for acknowledging the greek culture tough
>>533796333>Philosophy did not develop anywhere else before.I wouldn't go that far, but either it was far more basic despite a greater abundance of resources (Egypt, Babylon) or modest relative to their size (China, take Sun Tzu for instance, still relevant and often accurate). The Chinese came up with a whole lot of advanced shit early on, but they had the advantage of a drastically higher population, which makes it significantly less impressive. When exactly was ancient Greek philosophy genuinely surpassed? Uuuh.. 1800s? 1900s?It hit about an equal level in various areas at various times before then, but they didn't substantially improve on the Greek canon.
>>533797211>I wouldn't go that far, but either it was far more basic despite a greater abundance of resources (Egypt, Babylon)Others had their thoughts dragged by religion to which philosophy was a slave of. Not the case in Greece. Greeks didn't give a shit.
>>533797423The Chinese also weren't too concerned with that, but you are right in the case of Egypt, Babylon, India and others. They were dragged down by godshittery and larping.Larping really is one of the greatest enemies of advancement. It's precisely what held back Christian society for a long time as well. And the only time Muslims accomplished anything is when they dropped the larping for a fed centuries. Same with jews.>only time they accomplished anything is when they put down the fucking TalmudThe decline of Rome also had some connection to larping.>how about we deify the emperor yup yup sounds like a gread id-ACK
>>533797423i wouldn't subscribe to that - take Plato for example
>>533793861Yes to both. Unrelated but have you heard of the Scythian archers of Athens? Very interdasting.
>>533793861Greece was the intellectual high point of all of human history. >One time someone said that they were going to do something >everyone told them no, they cant do that >they did it anyway that was Rome. Anything written by Aristotle makes almost everything written after seem retarded. Diogenes and Pliny The Elder are S+ rank.
Romans have their highs but Archaic to Classical era Greeks are another animal, there's an unmatched beauty to its culture, particularly pre-Socratic
>>533795553I'd say they're the pinch point between Mesopotamia, the Scythians/Vedics, Egypt, and carried all that came before and their own wisdom to everyone that came after.
>>533795951Romans were able to build aqueducts than ran for hundreds of miles without math? Neat!
>>533795321Your sister, she should suck my cock then
>>533797818Not saying there weren't many exceptions. But if Aristotle wasn't who he was I think we'd be in the medieval period still.>>533797809>The Chinese also weren't too concerned with thatWhile true Chinese philosophy is housewife tier, though I've read it very very briefly.
>>533795222The Greeks in their prime were very adventurous, spinning out colonies all over the Mediterranean, setting up a Hellenistic kingdom in Pakistan. Not many white European civilizations made a serious attempt at creating a proper colony in the mid east. Greeks embedded themselves more fully than later crusader kingdoms ever did.
