The global oligarchy often makes use of national identities for their plans by taking over institutions and either reshaping the national identity into something different or painting things that line up with their interests as something that the nation should care about. If you're going to have a nation state, you need to keep the wrong people off the institutions of power, but it is really hard to do. As annoying as the periodic Catalan spergouts and general victimism the other regions pull against the Castillians are, I think having something like we have here here where there's kinda both a national identity and regional/sub-national identities is better. It means that even if the national institutions get taken over and start trying to reshape the national identity into something it shouldn't be, there will be pushback from the people because they have regional identities to fall back on instead of getting blinded by nationalism and following whatever their central ruler wants.If your identity is almost exclusively nation-wide, you get things like england where their national identity has been almost completely destroyed in just a couple decades because no one pushes against it or the USA where people are extremely pro-zionist because the jews influence their national institutions and tell them that Israel is important for the American nation, even though it obviously makes no sense.
