Conversion didn't solve an important problem, which is that a converso was still circumcised (ie. the main thing that makes a Jew a Jew) and converting won't regrow his foreskin. This is important because circumcision actually rewires an infant's brain and produces a lot of the psychoses commonly associated with Jews.
