I did the same thing almost a year ago. If somehow this post is real then get to a good place with decent year round weather, or be prepared to move with the seasons. I tried to hop trains and hitchhike from Ohio to California, but ended up doing a big multi state circle so I gave up and walked to an airport and brought a ticket to LA. I started with about 3k cash and had about 3.5k in gold and silver I took with me. I got food stamps and general relief ($221 a month of cash LA county gives to homeless people with no income) when I got here so I wasn’t bleeding cash. I enjoyed the summer on the beach but was tired of being broke. I got a temporary job sweeping sidewalks. It’s shit work and pays $18/hour, but that goes far when you hardly have bills. Today I cleaned up 3 bum turds and some homeless dude ODed last night so I threw some dead guys pile of trash into garbage bags for the trash truck to pick up. I cashed in the metals to buy an ‘06 E150 work van to sleep in, best $3500 (+$1000 for 6 months insurance and CA registration) I ever spent. I’m building a solar setup, and once that’s done I’ll insulate and furnish it some. When it’s all said and done I’m so much happier than when I was just working to pay rent.
