When you have a large enough economy, and especially a huge manufacturing base, you don't need a great army, you just need better technology than your opponents. That's how the US won WW2. But then the politicians starting the wars started making completely ludicrous objectives like "occupying a state thousands of miles away for seemingly forever, oh and also don't piss off the locals too much". War became nothing but a fools errand and excuse to make money for the arms industry. None of them are actually meant to be won, they are meant to ruin other countries and make profits for a small elite.
