Most families who settled in early Appalachia were not wealthy. Many of them settled through staking a claim on the frontier or being "given" the property by their former master at the end of an indendured servant contract. The mountains are rife with life and resources but low on arable land useful for plantation style seasonal farming. Around the bend of the 19th century meaningful development was made through coal mining. Most of the infrastructure was privately built and maintained by capitalists from cities like Pittsburgh as a means for sourcing coal for steel and power generation. The mining towns developed leading to the import of low skill laborers further stressing meager lower resources with more impoverished individuals. Coal mining was brutal back breaking work and the company's didn't bother paying a proper wage. There was a whole conflict over that and that's for another time but it further controlled the economic mobility of people in the region. Fast forward to the turn if the 20th century the great war and Kanawha valley's location and lack of regulations created a haven for chemical development. Then in the late 20th century there was a decline in steel production due to the economy globalizing(less domestic demand), increased environmental regulation, and labor cost arbitrage (offshoring) all worked in symphony to kill the coal industry. The chemical industry also seemed to shrink during that time although I'm not really certain why. Likely also relying on importing from the chinks but I'm just speculating.Since then, due to the lack of skilled workers, the terrain, and coal and LNG lobbying no other industry has really been able to break into the market.It's inconvenient for the liberals to talk about generationally impoverished and marginalized white people.
