Anything by Leiji Matsumoto is great, especially Galaxy Express 999 which has a lot to say about the consequences of living forever as a machine, with the movie from 79 legendary epic with all his heroes in one place and the series an epic fairy tale tragedy adventure. Harlock series by Rintaro is simply great too, Yamato, and lots more. The Daft Punk movie marked a comeback in later years that made some more good stuff too.

Then I liked it enough that I watched some of the series in English but had to put it off for a while because of other stuff.
