NATO alliance requires it's members to retain a certain degree of capability. Canada has managed to sit right on the minimum ever since the end of the cold war. From this context, the grippen is exactly what canada wants, an unexceptional jet that lets them meet the minimum NATO contribution. If it was up to them, they would continue to field the fa18, but airframes have a lifespan so they have to replace them.

The short story is they will never be used in an actual situation that requires current gen jet's so functionally the difference is 0.
>>
>>533926190
To me the F35 is the superior fighter. Gripen is good, but doesn't solve any issues.
If the fear is that the f35 will be locked in a fight against the US, then i'm telling you now, in a fight against the US we won't have any jets, period.
In my ideal no budget military you'd get both and have your f-35's run in and detect and silence all the enemy radar installations while marking targets for the gripens to fire at from beyond the horizon.

The Gripen is inferior for fulfilling the mission except for cost and maintenance time.

Harper makes the dea. Trudeau backs out, and then re-entered the deal years later because fighter jets are actually necessary. Then Carney exits the deal again.

So useless the US copied the concept with a Temu Gripen E (F-15EX) to replace F-35's for domestic defense and in their own internal study found it to be "highly effective" against their own 5th gen fighters. So useless the US upped their purchase of them to 267 just the other day.

Pretty funny how they're trying to sell Canada a jet that they're replacing with Temu Gripen E's.

The only thing those piles of shit will be bombing are their "fellow Canadians"
They're moving full steam ahead with their genocidal 2030 agenda over there.
We need to invade Canada over crimes against humanity, and I mean it
>>
>>533948404
Lol, no it's absolutely not. The F-35 has a slight edge in first shot capability under ideal conditions 3v3, but the Gripen E has superior missile lethality and survivability and when you're talking about domestic defense it's not jet vs jet but system in system with GlobalEye and ground assets that radically tips the scale in favor of the Gripen E and it's much more lethal arsenal and better survivability.

The main threat is also the SU-57 which is not anything close to a F-35 and will be ruthlessly dominated in jet vs jet skirmishes.

Low maintenance and first strike survivability through dispersed operations means everything for a country with a smaller fleet like Sweden or Canada. If they're on an airbase, they're gone on day 1.

It's also a AI ready and drone controller ready and the software is open, so Canada can independently make drones and software changes for it or team up with other Gripen nations. They can even make it fly fully autonomously with a drone swarm for high risk missions into contested airspace. Or make even newer and better missiles for it.
>>
>>533948404
The F-35s only capable mission is foriegn excursion and assault under American command and control.
It’s completely incapable of arctic staging or defense. It can’t even land on any runway not US approved and swept clear of any possible debris. Literally an enemy bombs the Canadian airfield where f35s are based (the first strategic thing they’ll do) and the fighters are forced to scramble and relocate to American bases and control.

Meanwhile Gripen can land on highways, the fleet can be dispersed if there is a threat: fueling and rearming done within and hour, unlike multi hours for the f35.

Plus (and chud will whine about this): Canadian Fighter Pilot are the best in the world, because they specialize in the basics. They don’t depend software for an edge to fly and fight.

I’d love to see our best jocks push the gripen, in a serious 1v1 with f35, and see the results. (America would never let that happen because: “military trade secrets”)
>>
>>533926190
>Carney is going to cancel the (remotely-locked) F35
Is this catastrophizing or are there indications this is actually happening? No F35 means no more Canadian F35 subcontractors. Because Canada's manufacturing industry isn't in enough pain already... By the time the Liberals are done will Canada have any export industries of note beyond Alberta oil and some prairie agriculture?

>>533926588
>affordable
The government can simply redefine affordable to mean whatever they need it to mean. Like they did with drinking water on reserves. Or like they did with affordable in Toronto housing construction.

>The F-35 has a slight edge in first shot capability under ideal conditions
lmao, its more than a slight edge
>>
>>533926658
Why do Canadians still talk about the Avro Arrow? It would be totally obsolete like every other fighter jet from that time period. We are talking about a fighter from the fucking 50s.
>>
>>533949415
F35 can do those things, it's just if you do them it will void the warranty
>>
>>533949462
Gripen has offered up a vastly superior subcontractor and domestic manufacturing offer than f35. Not only will all Canadian Gripen be assembled in Canada, all maintenance will be as well (unlike f35) and also a Canadian data centre will be built to secure and protect all IT of the craft (unlike f35 which remains under us military control).

As for inter operational functionality with the IS and other NATO forces shared systems, the Gripen already has integrated. Theoretically the US could just cut all that off, but then they’re also completely on their own with no shared battle space data.

(The gripen Canadian deal includes a couple AWACS-type planes.)

TL:DR: more jets, better jets, all built in Canada, sovereignty assured, mission appropriate, plus massive extras.
>>
>>533926190
>(remotely-locked)

what does remotely locked mean ? Can the US lock the F35 so it wont start unless Canada keeps making its payments ?
