my state is being sold down the river to build data centers. these facilities are overwhelmingly unpopular but local governments are ignoring their constituents and moving ahead with construction. at the same time, water and sewer has been or is being privatized.

it's going to be a very bad situation for many people.

I have a suspicion they voted for this.

they build 20 in my city this year. They plan 80 new data centers by 2030. Its all staffed by indians.

the decision isn't put to popular vote. when i say it's unpopular, i mean a lot of people are showing up to town hall events and voicing extreme disapproval. they're trying to build a few data centers 20 minutes from where i live. a lot of people are organizing protests, town hall events, etc. on facebook, and there are talks of hiring a law firm to represent our interests.
>>
Who needs those data centers? Palantir?
>>
>>533977440
no one knows because it's all hidden behind lawyers and deliberate obfuscation. you can find out the names of construction companies and law firms representing the construction operation, but i've yet to see who stands to own and operate the computer hardware/software.

But they will if you let them. If Politicians are straight up ignoring constituents, and there's no vote, it's not going to end well. Politicians aren't allowed to just screw over their constituents because globohomo is pressuring them.
>>
>>533977304
Unfortunately there’s very little local governments can do, it’s state law that is the problem. If state law allows data centers as an approved use, localities must zone for it or they can be sued for the right to build. State law supports the data centers in this case. There’s literally nothing they can do to “ban” a data center. The only thing they can do is proactively zone a really shitty plot of land for a data center and then pass a bunch of bullshit ordinances that make it really difficult to build and operate a data center to make it as unattractive as possible. Even then, they risk being sued if they go too far in these efforts.

The state zoning laws need to change.

AI doesn’t exist. It is to build surveillance systems to grab all the data, all of it, then use massive amounts of hardware to achieve the processing power to do anything of practical use with it. AI is the marketing label, and the current public facing AIs only exist to con people into thinking it is something more than software. We are nearing the end of Moore’s Law, technical advancement is stagnating on the hardware level. No longer having a not so distant future providing smaller and faster versions of current chips means improved quality gives way to quantity. Quantity being data centers using more resources than makes sense to brute force our way towards what AI has never turned into.
>>
>>533978054
That much is obvious. I was thinking the same thing after I posted. I should have said “with the current laws, there’s nothing LEGAL that can be done to ban a data center”

We had a data center proposed for our county. There was such a huge turnout they had to move the meeting to the local arena. It was overwhelmingly against doing it. So they tabled the vote. They picked it up again a few weeks later when there were less people there to lynch them for doing it. But it doesn't end there.
On the week they had the vote, the data center company sent out an email to the local unions telling them to sign up for speaking slots so normal people wouldn't be able to be heard. So on the day of the vote, they had 60 people sign up to speak. They made it through 12, mostly in favor of the data center, before time ran out. They called a vote to extend the time by 30 minutes and they refused. They voted then and there to allow the data center to come in. It's gonna cost us $500 million and won't be ready for 6-8 years. I fucking hate them so much.

Probably the most unsung breach of freedom in the modern world is that municipalities do not have the right to control what businesses and people settle and pass through them.

>>
>>533977671

>nobody, it's just embezzlement

This is a strong possibility imo. These projects represent tens of billions of dollars, maybe more, and countless jobs at each site. So in a way, they're creating a phantom-ware bubble and most people have zero clue what a datacenter is to begin with so most don't even ask relevant questions.

The fact is, we already have datacenters. Anon in another thread confirmed my thought on this, which is that many of these are not even at capacity, and you easily could stand up new equipment to bring the processing power online. You don't need 1,000 mega complexes to do that. The scale of this is incomprehensible.
>>
>>533982454
These centers are also extremely vulnerable to any form of guerilla or decentralized attack. Tons of outdoor pipelines, minimal security on the outside, very minimal access to law enforcement if an attack were to magically happen, not saying one would.
Not to mention the confirmed data showing not only massive smell pollution, resource gorging, and the latest data showing harmful low frequency waves - all things the avg person can't vote or move away from easily.
Creates a dangerous meeting of problems that have no verbal diplomatic solutions, at least not before too many people are hurt. Leaves people with not much to lose by turning to physical damage to the infrastructure.
And honestly, I really wouldn't blame anyone.
The 2-3% gain humanity gets on individual benefits in certain isolated niches of tech, is not worth the detriment. Just another gimmicky sidegrade already outdated the moment it was shat out the womb, by concepts that already exist and are more natural and beneficial (like transhumanism).
Always get a laugh when AI whores call people luddites so readily. Hearts in the right place but not their minds.
>>
>>533983336

true. I get irked by all the water comments because it is a closed loop system. I don't see any of the claims they use tons of water substantiated. They have huge tanks, and a massive closed loop water cooling system; which is pretty cool because if you zoom out it's like a giant computer being built. But you dont' just have the tap opened dumping water endlessly.
>>
Why do you want to restrict business? Honestly. Server farms make technology work. It doesn't matter if it's popular or not, it's a business and they have money. You have no right to stop a business from existing. Would you ban factories too and become california?

What is the map there indicating? Is each one of those markers where they're going to build one? Why are they building them so close to major cities if they're going to have an adverse affect on the surrounding population? Feels like something like this should be remotely located. I can't speak on Philly although I'm sure it's the same, but Pittsburgh already has a lot of issues with air quality due to local factories/coal refineries.
>>
>>533983495
I don't believe it's a totally net-zero system, i would wager they need to top off with a few thousand gallons of water weekly if they're vast. But at the end of the day, that's pretty low.

basically every software company. the only software that exists anymore is SaaS. instead of opening ‘program’ on PC now everybody opens a webpage version. those webpages need to be hosted somewhere. the reality tho is its some form of fraud. when you examine the states with most data centers, those states are also big farm country with property tax loopholes to accommodate 10,000 acre properties. SaaS corps are building data centers in these areas then likely receiving abatements on property taxes from local govt. this allows them to then write off biz losses as property expenditures with no risk of taxes. most probably dont even host on site bcuz it risks their vendor contracts. easier and cheaper to pay for hosting and fake building.
>proofs
as soon as Ohio AG approved that property tax ban quest, same week all the major kike corps taking over Ohio went silent and renegged on data center agreements. been up in air since. thats how you can tell this all about abatement loop holing. willing to bet PA is almost identical hence the middle of the state being data center empty. idk how quaker property tax works but willing to bet it has same loopholes.
>fwiw

they drive up the cost of electricity and water. the claim is that these data centers bring tax revenues to local governments, but it never works out because these places get a decade of tax abatement from local government -- at which point they close down and move elsewhere for a new tax abatement.
>>
>>533984476
They drive up electricity prices and strain the local grid,m. If the tax money states and municipalities collected from the data centres were used to upgrade infrastructure it might actually benefit locals but that tax money just goes into general revenue to be spent on Somali daycares and what have you while your local power utility simply passes the increased costs to the citizens. It’s just another example of privatizing profits and socializing losses

They put them near population centers to get access to someone else's existing electric grid and water supply.
It would be possible for them to build in remote locations, find their own water, and generate their own electricity. But it's way cheaper to buy a gullible politician with promises of tax revenue, and plug into someone's existing infrastructure.
Everyone's water and electric supply is stressed, and utility rates skyrocket as electric companies scramble to find new suppliers.

its why china can eat their costs as nation building but ends up having a company go bankrupt or devoured in merger in the western capitaltis government auction for lowest bidding contractors.
The businesses that build t+ese data centers will lose out in the end then the data centers will be taken over by companies like flock and mojamg for pennies on the dollar.

I said nothing about countries oppressing people with AI. I also said nothing of the other side being China.

When I call out terminator style AI warfare is coming I mean it in the same way Nuclear warfare came during ww2. Right now Palestinia is the testing ground for the following AI based warfare systems:

>Lavender: An AI system that identified up to 37,000 Palestinians suspected of being Hamas militants, often with minimal human verification of its AI-generated targets.
>Habsora (The Gospel): A tool designed to quickly analyze surveillance and communication data to identify infrastructure targets, allowing for rapid airstrikes.
>"Where's Daddy?": A tracking system that notifies military operators when targeted individuals enter their homes, often leading to strikes on entire families.
>Operational AI Data Factory: An advanced system that aggregates live video, sensor data, and signals intelligence to create a, real-time picture of the battlefield, now utilized in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.

these are the ones we know about, the public ones. You do not want to be in a war where the other side has perfected these systems and you have not.

Why so many in PA? We have tons coming in here in Texas too but I understand why our grid is completely run by the state, no fed oversight so it's much easier to buy politicians and get the favorable deals they want. Plus Texans are greedy AF and trip over each other to sell grandpa's ranch to developers while simultaneously whining about the state being ruined.
