America can defeat Iran, but it would be way too expensive to accomplish - both economically and politically. Theoretically the US could choose to opt for a full occupation akin to the war in Iraq and would likely be successful with it, although it would almost inevitably prove to be a much harder campaign. Bu that would cost hundreds of billions if no trillions and the US would be responsible for the military occupation of the country afterwards, that would be a constant resource drain for them. Afghanistan practically proved that its impossible to militarily control the country if the population really does not like you or your values. So, America's best bet would be a regime change in Iran done by Iranians themselves, but with their military campaign they had pretty much tarnished the prospects of such developments for years to come. The whole war with Iran retrospectively was a very bad and poorly designed idea - all they had to do was wait for unrest inside the country to force change, but instead Trump decided he could just force that change through a war, which almost never works. I suppose he was too blinded by his success in Venezuela.
USA (Israel)'s strategic objective was killing Iranians and making them poorer. Mission accomplished on day one.
