Soviet government hardly interfered at all in the workings of their local government. They had their own government, spoke their own language, and made their own contributions to industry and science. Everything bad you can think of is a consequence of Eastern Europe suffering much more from the war and iron curtain imposed by the West. And where are those countries now? Poland is the only country that has managed somehow to pull ahead, thanks to cheap labour and factories relocated from Europe. What about Estonia and Latvia? They used to be major hubs for science and industry, but now you literally have no future in those countries. I don’t even want to mention Ukraine, which, even without the war, managed to go from being the industrial heartland of the entire Soviet Union to a backwater with nothing but farms and casinos and sex tourism

There would be no Baltic states or Finland without the Russian Empire promoting local culture away from the long-dominant Polish, German, and Swedish respectively. There would be no Ukrainians or Belarusians without the USSR to raise them from just another region of Russia to their own entities. There would be no Kazakhs or Kyrgyz or Uzbeks without the USSR to divide Central Asian Turks into their own entities.
