Many of those 'owned' homes are a 99 year lease on an apartment in a C or D tier city (or a brand new development city) while the 'owner' still rents an apartment in a B+ or A city because that's where all of the jobs are. Home ownership isn't an end-all statistic either. I generally argue that home ownership is a lifestyle choice, not an investment decision. It gives you a huge amount of risk and concentration in a singular asset. Though I think returns on equities are going to plummet across the world as we hit demographic decline in every non-dogshit country and our market will start looking more like the Chinese market (basically flat).
