Americans need to realise that leaving NATO would be the largest act of self-harm a single country had committed since Japan declared war on America in world war II.They would stand to lose an enormous amount and gain very little. Over 30 military bases would be dismantled across Europe. Access to airbases and naval ports could be restricted at will, making interventions in the middle east very difficult. Military influence would be decimated. They would lose access to the largest single intelligence sharing network on earth, and fragment it for the countries which remained. They would lose protection for their assets across Europe and lose control of important hardware which protects American citizens at home. They would also seriously jeopardize there relationships with Australia and Japan. Why would they trust a country which won't even defend its own backyard?The idea of leaving NATO is so preposterous, that I cannot even for a second believe that the idea is being floated with any seriousness. I suspect that it is merely being used as a threat to coerce European nations to increase their military budgets, and by doing so, weaken their economies to Americas benefit.
