Sure, the Ukraine war is bad for Russia, but Putin was in a checkmate position in 2022 and he had to choose between bad options: either fight now, or delay fighting until Ukraine has mass produced Korshun and Hrim-2 missiles, or withdraw to 1991 borders and let NATO opens FOBs within spitting distance of Rostov, Kursk, Voronezh, etc. Putin bet on invasion and rolled the dice. Was it the right choice in retrospect? Maybe the right choice would have been to invade all of Ukraine in 2014, when Ukraine's military was in a state of disarray and low readiness.

>the tiny nation becomes a new military superpower
That's not a good take at all
1. Ukraine inherited a large Soviet arsenal, although not quite as large as Russia did.
2. Ukraine has received a ton of foreign military materiel, both finished weapon systems and components.
3. Pre-war Ukraine had about 30% the population of Russia, however Ukraine compensates for the population disparity by using more forceful recruitment methods.
4. Ukraine has received a ton of economic support, which allows Ukraine to endure mass conscription and bombardment without suffering an economic collapse.
5. Ukraine has far better C4ISTAR infrastructure than Russia, due to foreign support.
6. Ukraine is weaker than ever, because its economy is hollowed out and it has the worst demographics in the world, however it is propped up in its current state by foreign aid.
