With all these studies out there saying that educated people vote this way or that way I would like to ask the question. What makes someone educated?Discussing educated verse uneducated is really just an exercise in gatekeeping. Is someone without highschool degree uneducated? How about an Associate degree, Bachelors, Masters? A general degree that doesn't have a field of study? What purpose does a degree in art have outside of the studio? What purpose does a chemistry degree have outside the lab? Do either of these degrees make someone educated enough to vote in regards to tax law?Personally it isn't the degree, but the courses. Statistics is a core competency for reading and understanding scientific publications outside of a person's expertise, with out it, researching new information is severely hindered.Physics gives a good grasp of how things work.English is helpful and generally included in any level of education. Personally technical writing was the most helpful in regards to understanding documentation. Most people don't use anything more than arithmetic for their daily lives so I wouldn't say that mathematics is a requirement to be considered educated, but it helps, especially understanding compound interest.Overall I would say that reading and understanding three things is the hallmark of an educated person.1. Supreme Court documents, and legislation2. Scientific publications3. Financial documents, mortgages, taxes, stock portfolios
