This kills China.

>>534138665
I hope we move past lithium or discover a new and better process to recycle lithium from older batteries.
>>
>>534138665
The lithium would be down in one of the large valleys, not actually up in the mountains. Lithium settled out from seawater long ago into these large valleys.

Those "small" reactors in aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines are still pretty big.

The airlifted one can power military bases so they don't need as much fuel.
And that's a new concept.
Almost half of all US casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan were related to fuel transports so it's a big deal especially now that America will go into Iran and flying a drone into a fuel truck is super easy.

Sodium is actually worse than lithium but its so much cheaper once economies of scale get up there that it will be better.

Say for home solar. If you live in much of the US, a properly sized solar panel array isn't that expensive. It's the batteries that get you. Bring a DIY solar install down to under 10k for 30-50kwh or storage and it'd be a really good thing for a lot of people... and who cares if your batteries at home on a rack weigh more?

The Appalachians are basically solid volcanic rock covered in millions of years of soil made from rotting plant and animal matter. Not lithium minerals. Those are down in the large valleys. I do know the geology of the region. It'll likely be easy to get too. Lots of towns and rod networks, and mining is in the blood of those people.
>>
>>534142609
A bunch of different minerals. Lithium, neodymium, tungsten, bismuth etc.
These resources are available just about anywhere the main difference is that they take no issue with completely fucking up their environment. Much harder to pull that stuff out of the ground economically in the US.

No, it's that lithium is too volatile for how inefficient it is. Most of those coin & button-sized batteries have been lithium-ion since the 60s, which is a stupid moniker because all alkali metals are ionic by default. The only people who care about lithium deposits are VPN-samefagging retards like OP who don't know how a battery works, then posts some ChatGPT nonsense when they get called out by an anon.

If a battery doesn't run off at least potassium at this point, it's not worth it. All a pile needs is a substrate that has open valence spots, and really good chemical solutions, because that's what drives the whole reaction. Until companies can figure out how to use the metals in the middle of the periodic table that aren't as unstable as alkalis are, battery beyond a gas-powered car are dead in the water.

Are we being bombarded by Lithium at the atomic level right now? Lithium isn't native to earth.

"Lithium is not native to Earth in the sense that it was not formed on the planet; it is a primordial element created during the Big Bang approximately 13.8 billion years ago, with additional contributions from classical novae (stellar explosions)."

this isn't real news, they always have articles about some rare earth material being found that's going to do X. rare earth materials can be found literally everywhere. the reason why china is the only place that produces the shit is because everyone just decided to ship their shit over to them to process it. this caused china to become the only country capable of refining shit like lithium at a global scale. no one else set up the manufacturing because it's cheaper to have china do it, and no one as of yet has invested in their own industry to make it possible without them.

the most basic yet complete info you can find for different elements is in the periodic table of elements, and can be found for free in the internet.
literally anyone can check the part of the table where it says "rare earths".

>>534149752

from what I've read, sodium has a different charge profile, which makes it completely unable to replace lithium in most use cases.

Cute how people still declare with complete lack of authority that the earth is 6000 years old because they read it online. The actual critical rare earths that China controls are way down the periodic table. Shit like gallium and molybdenum. They don't process them anywhere else. What people don't understand is China loses money on REEs because even they have to spend 10x money cleaning up the toxic spillover compared to how much they earn. It simply wouldn't ever work in a first world country that cares about the environment AND profits.
>>
>>534150300
Most people looking at the PT would get glazed eyes. They don't understand the sublime beauty of it at all. And good luck getting them to pronounce the elements.
>>
>>534138665
The US already has enough lithium and other rare earth minerals

What it lacks is the ability to process the minerals

All the minerals in the US get mined, then sold to china for processing, then get bought back from china.

That's the actual problem, there's no on-shore refining taking place, so finding new lthium deposits doesn't change fuck all. We already have enough lithium deposits, it just means more lithium gets sold to china and then bought back from china, it doesn't fundamentally solve the onshoring problem the US has

I hate having to explain this shit to people while MSM articles maliciously "inform" people the wrong things constantly.

These deposits are not new. They have known about them for close to 100 years. It is where the majority of the country's lithium was produced before the 1980s, when they stopped mining it for "economic reasons" (this means a right wing capitalist wanted to buy elsewhere for less).
>>
Lithium was never the problem. It's rare metals like dysprosium, neodymiun, gadolinium that China has that we don't
>>
>>534153891
This is not a relevant point, because there is no "US". The only interests the government works for are those of the largest holders of capital. There is no nation. Just a political reality TV show propagandizing you into thinking you have one and trying to convince you that the wins of some capitalist are something you get to share in.

China has a government that will actually invest in technological development to overcome its oil dependency. It may be entirely unsuccessful in doing so -- that's a realistic possible outcome. But it will try, it won't work tirelessly to preserve some capitalist's rentier income.

We have environmental laws making it nigh impossible to refine and process them. We could easily set aside a lifeless wasteland like the Nevada Test Site for some facilities, but that would be easy and smart so unlikely to happen.
>>
>>534155577
mountain-pass isn't just a mine it's a rare earth refinery too. It was closing down in 2017 but was acquired specifically to counter China and keep rare earth refining and mining going in US. Since then it has grown exponentially as more and more companies are switching to US and away from China to supply their rare earth needs.

Well, good news on that front. Governments have theoretically unlimited capital. It's not in short supply. They don't need to go get it from someone else. They can't run out of it.

But if the general population understood that, it would/could threaten existing private interests and rentier income.
>>
>>534155989
>we don't mine it
We do mine it though. mountain-pass is a mine that mines rare earths. Not sure why you are denying a literally existing right now company mining rare earths in the US.
Now the new deposit that has just been found will take several years to develop but this is similar to other mines. And yes the west and specifically the US have committed to doing this since China has consistently raised tariffs and decreased sales of rare earths in the last 15 years. Australia has already invested heavily in developing it's own rare earth mines and refining with US soon to follow.

Miggers blame China for the West shipping all their production and jobs overseas, as if China as an (at the point it happened) irrelevant shithole held a gun to the head of Western capitalists to force them to do so. They also harbor a violent hate of anything even aesthetically connected to communism (even though they're always quick to dismiss China as following "State Capitalism" fascism, or even National Socialism whenever China does something even they can't denigrate). Though many of them hate boomers, they still hold a grudge against every member of the "Axis of Evil" the TV (or their favorite podcaster) tells them to hate. Finally, they see antagonizing China as another way to own the libs, even though most libs also hate China because "muh anti-trans conversion camps", "muh Hong Kong protests", "muh Taiwan", " muh Tianmen Square", "muh Wigger genocide", etc.

Even if we had a Chinese level of supply chain creation capability (right now we only know stock buybacks, palantir, eat hot chip and lie) it would take like 5 years for production to come online. China does not have a monopoly on these deposits they're just the only ones willing to develop them
