They really thought that they had purchased a piece of national history embodied in stone, and were naive enough to think that mocking laughter from Europe was respect for the wealth that enabled them to buy what their own tradition and culture lacked.

Britain and many other prominent Europeans thought the American experiment of freedom was stupid and that America would soon fall. WW1 & 2 finally forced European elites to recognize and respect America. In many ways the USA saved Europe in WW2 due to its massive industrial base that supplies the allies for years before Pearl Harbour got America into the fighting.For example the US sold massive amounts of shitty military equipment to Russia and sent industrial planners over to get its industry up and running which helped soften the blow of the Nazi invasion.
