I rented for 4 years and got priced out of the first one because I was fucking too much(seriously) and had a confrontation with my upstairs neighbor, despite it being a bachelor friendly metropolitan area. the other apartment raised rent a couple hundred bucks but couldn't even maintain basic plumbing and once again my propensity to thrust caused friction with neighbors. they kept my security deposit and tried to squeeze another month's rent out of me until I filed in small claims over some property that got damaged in one of their plumbing mishaps. the worst part is after having to deal with actual slumlords you see that they are actually millionaires on food stamps and the only scenario where their wealth "trickles down" is in major cities or tourist destinations.
