The most "serious" thing that occurs to me is that Russia and China make a suicide pact and decide to throw their nukes at the United States, knowing full well that they are going to receive an equally devastating response in return. But obviously that's not going to happen because nobody wants to cause a nuclear holocaust. Outside of that, the biggest threat to the United States is perhaps its own political instability and the massive amount of weapons that the civilian population has. I see it as more likely that the United States will succumb to a civil war than to an external war, since if the fight were between the Americans themselves, I see it as unlikely that they would use nuclear weapons in their own cities. But I also don't think a civil war is going to happen, because all US politicians know very well that a civil war would not only destroy the American economy, but would also automatically turn China into the only superpower in the world, and not even the most hippie politician in Washington wants something like that.
