They're largely shitholes thanks to communism. Those with EU membership are reforming and improving quite rapidly. Czech Rep, Poland and the Baltics are succes stories in that regard. I do believe the rest will follow if they are able to reform governance, unlike for example Hungary. Hungary had a massive headstart on the Baltics but you can see what corruption and mismanagement does to a country, the Baltics caught up and are better places to live now than Hungary. Eastern Europe has plenty of potential and given enough time I can see the distribution of wealth moving eastwards.
