If even one life could be saved with any money that he doesn't need to spend on himself/his family, then morally that's almost up there with murder. The average person's philanthropic footprint is so small and it doesnt matter, so this is a moral quandary mainly for the wealthy and Im surprised so many (those that aren't Jews at least) manage to not sleep over it.
