There are black squirrels in NYC and they're starting to make their way upstate. They're technically the same species as the common gray, but we know the blacks are far more aggressive and have difficulty planning for the harsher winter clime. Not they tend to expand in dense forest and city environments but tend to not do as well in sparse forest and suburban sprawl. Red tailed hawks moved into NYC in the 2000's. Not too surprising that having black fur would be an advantage when near tall buildings eating nuts people dropped on the ground or the occasional acorn from planted trees on the sidewalks. Only Central Park is favorable for the true grays.
