Because these misfolded proteins are universally present in Alzheimer's patients they still need to be further investigated, it isn't a waste of time. The most interesting topic regarding this disease that I've personally come across was one study that accidentally discovered all of the Alzheimer's brains they were performing research on were infected with a specific type of fungus. It was impossible for it to have been contamination between the specimens because they were never exposed to each other. I've never heard anything else about this ever since the discovery was first made, it was like everyone just completely forgot about it.
