If you look at the mythology surrounding the aliens, it really seems like they are genetic engineers and one of their top technologies is the ability to edit lifeforms to make them more useful. The 'aliens' we see are likely just a body which is grown as needed, like a robot body, but using genetics and biology instead of a machine. There is a bunch of evidence pointing to humans being a hybrid using alien DNA and some of the native chimp DNA to make a loyal pet/slave class here on earth. Apparently the aliens made us a little too sexy because the bible is full of warnings about the sons of human and alien sex pairings being monsters. I figure on a long enough timeline the cats and dogs we bring with us will be as intelligent as people when people are ascending to higher levels of consciousness. The hominid body type is just sort of the best blueprint for earth, or maybe the crab. So many things evolve into crab that it's a bit nuts. So the gene editing aliens make a hominid body to use here on earth.
