I have family members and friends who are police officers. Not only that but I've had very positive interactions with the police in recent years which has helped me personally build trust with local law enforcement. They put their lives on the line everyday to protect others and uphold the law. I find it rather bias that the news media only cover the negative side of law enforcement. Whether it be a race based case like for instance like with the 2014 fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald by officer Jason Van Dyke or the the 2014 Ferguson riots that followed the August 9th fatal shooting of Black teenager Michael Brown by white Police Officer Darren Wilson there always seems to be a blatant focus on the police officers themselves for all the blame and what law enforcement could do better. Could the question ever be called up that maybe gang ridden and low income black communities have cultural problems that they themselves need to fix rather than focusing solely on holding law enforcement accountable?

The public generally is more positive to sheriff's departments than they are to city police forces. Part of this is because the sheriff is typically elected so his enforcement of the laws tends to align with local community values. City police however usually have an appointed police chief who answers to politicians, maybe a mayor, maybe a city council. That extra degree of distance between the people and the enforcers of public order creates a distortion where the law serves the political class above the people.
