If you wish to survive the next several years, you must start producing food for yourself.

Plant things NOW so they will be mature in your time of need.

Cost of cherries at even the "cheap" grocery stores here is 7$ per pound. The cherry tree I just purchased was 70 dollars and gives TWENTY POUNDS of fruit per season. It will literally pay for itself twice over in ONE growing season at current prices and those will only go UP.

Keep bees. A man can live off honey.
>>
>>534432753
You get very little honey from a hive. It is a good idea to raise them, but the main benefit is pollinating your crops.
>>
>>534432691
Also worth noting that a cherry tree will continue producing fruit for *30 years* once mature. At current prices, that would mean it pays for itself 60 times over. If you purchased a stock and it increased in value 60x, you would be ridiculously happy.
>>
>>534433036
Some varieties can fruit for even longer than that, stretching into CENTURIES.
Your great grandchildren could eat delicious fruit from a tree you plant now.

Duckweed and azolla ponds with fish are the optimal green manure. Also optimal for wastewater treatment along with filtration via biochar.
>>
>>534433347
Duckweed and azolla with fish pondage could rapidly replace industrial fertilizer.
>>
>>534433347
It is even better if you add some freshwater shellfish!
>>
>>534433461
Yes.
Duckweed and azolla can also feed chickens (also good to have some guinea and turkeys to protect chickens from predators). Chickens additional source of fertilizer.
>>
>>534433634
Geese are a great option, as well. They are very protective over your flock.

you COULD learn to grow food for yourself, but its a lifetime of grueling labor especially without fertilizer or gas powered tools.

food is extremely cheap right now. you can buy one year of food with 1 day of work in a first world country. just buy rice/beans/sugar and store it. store enough for other people too. that way in their time of need, they can work the fields for you, and you can trade food with them.
>>
>>534433839
It's better than nothing, but you really want to add more if you have room for it.

The UK had food rationing well into the 1950's, long after WW2 ended. Storing food is good, but not a long term plan and growing perennials is really not that much work. Living on nothing but rice and beans is a miserable experience.

A typical Romanian "commieblock" (prefabricated concrete panel building, or panel bloc) can generally support a significant, though not unlimited, amount of weight, largely due to strict, redundant safety requirements during construction.Estimated Capacity: 20 to 30+ Drums (distributed)A standard, properly maintained apartment of roughly 60m2 (645 sq ft) can likely support 20 to 30 of your 400 lb drums (approximately 8,000–12,000+ lbs total), provided they are distributed across the apartment to avoid concentrated load points.Floor Live Load Capacity: Standard residential construction is designed for roughly 80–100 lbs per square foot (psf) (3.8--4.8 kN/m2).The 400 lb Factor: At 400 lbs per 55-gallon drum, you are looking at a heavy load. A single drum has a diameter of roughly 2 feet, occupying ≈3.14 sq ft. A single drum exerts ≈127 psf (400÷3.14), which is higher than typical design load.QuoraCrucial ConsiderationsDistribution is Mandatory: You cannot stack these drums in one spot. Distributing them, preferably along load-bearing walls, is critical to avoid structural failure of the concrete slab.Structure Type: These buildings, particularly those from the 1970s and 1980s, are generally very sturdy due to being constructed with prefabricated concrete panels.Age and Maintenance: While they are strong, the aging utility systems and potential damage to the concrete from water or previous renovations are bigger risks than the structural slabs themselves

>>534434852
Honey is medicinal. When exposed to a wet and slightly salty environment (like your insides), enzymes in the honey break it down, releasing small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. This is why it acts as a disinfectant.

Its not really about the food supplements, or its perceived monetary value.

Its about understanding life-cycles, diseases, pests, nutrients, PH-levels... etc...

Learning how to make things grow and thrive.

Verses making things decay & rot...

But, as part of gardening / growing things, Decay and Rot are useful elements of the recycling / compost efforts.

Down here, I can barely get any chill hours. I'm sort of putting off which variety I'll go with by only buying rootstock trees... but with the Mahaleb, even just a few trees can be turned into 40 or 50, they sucker pretty well. OFH87 is still under patent, but supposedly it will sucker really well too (it's pear rootstock, not cherry).

You should order rootstock too. Krymsk, I think, for cherry up there... it's supposedly blizzard proof. One of those trees can become 10, and you can practice grafting twigs from this hybrid of yours onto the rootstock trees.

>>534446812
Advice depends heavily on where you live and what you want to grow. What hardiness zone are you in and what do you like to eat?
>>
>>534446812
You put seeds in the ground and try to keep them wet until stuff you want to eat is falling off the plants.
>>
>>534446958
Some seeds need cold stratification and many, like apples, need grafting to get consistent results. Each apple seed is a genetic lottery. We only have so many varieties because of people like Johnny Appleseed planting them all over the place and cloning the good ones.

>>534446748

Honestly you people laugh at toilet paper hoarders, but you really dont have enough toilet paper yourselves. The average person uses 1 roll per day. If you have a family of 4, that's 28 rolls a week. Over 100 a month. TP rolls will be worth their weight in gold in a few months, because everyone needs it.

If any of that bullshit was true those plants would have gone extinct prior to human cultivation. If you want an apple tree throw some fucking apples around and nature will do the rest.
>>
>>534447244
Cold stratification is just mimicking the seeds going through a winter.
The good news with apples is that even the ones that suck to eat out of hand make good cider, which is exactly what our ancestors did with apples.

I have, not interested. Apples don’t have pink flesh, it will never be an apple.

>I'm fairly limited on space, so I really needed to go with a dwarf variety.
One of the Krymsk varieties is dwarfing, the others are semi-dwarf. And even if you can't keep the trees, give them away... there have to be a few non-jeets still up there that would appreciate them. You don't have to think of it as a gift, either... they're "spares" that you could make a new tree from if yours at home dies. Don't keep all the trees at one site, so to speak.

There's an indigenous group of African islanders that gets 60% of their calories from raw honey and they're shredded as fuck. Everything you think you know about health is a lie

Those brown spots are stippling damage, which is dead leaf tissue caused by something feeding on the leaf, most commonly spider mites. Just remove the affected leaves and spray insecticidal soap under the leaves

The point isn't just having the food to eat. Practicing and encountering both common and uncommon challenges and issues in the context of growing food and raising animals puts you in a massively advantageous position relative to someone who has neither theoretical nor practical experience in either of those things. The most important part is figuring out what works in your specific climate. And this education pays double because in the process of figuring out what you can grow in your area and how best to manage it you'll often learn that many of these crops or their local equivalents grow naturally in your region but people just have no idea what it is or that it's edible at all. An experienced grower can very quickly sidestep into being a forager, and the more you can grow and forage on the land the less you need to rely on centralized distribution networks.

Thanks for the high effort bread fren, changes from all the 1pbtid mossad honeypots.
When SHTF I'll be fishing in the sea on my sailboat. I carved a stern sculling oar to navigate the harbour in low/no wind without the engine. Can make a profit by bringing looted coal from Newcastle back into Sydney once some rudimentary steam industry starts popping up again.

Sailing might get dicey with naval warfare. Same reason intercontinental trade is unlikely to go well during that period.

The Germans shutting down fishing is one of the main reasons the Dutch "Hunger Winter" was so bad.
>>
>>534454905
Australia imports virtually all of its refined fuel products. Once SHTF there won't be a single drop of diesel left two months after the fun starts. There won't be anything worth blockading anywhere around Australia. No one will waste their time chasing down 30 foot plastic sailboats that are barely visible on radar anyway.

Cool. Doing any other fruit trees? I keep threatening to try to grow citrus rootstock, but there's no where to get sour orage fruit/seed around here. Have to be in a city big enough to have a persian grocery according to Google.
>>
>>534455936
You should try kumquat. It's a little bit more cold hardy than other citrus and, unlike other citrus, you eat the whole fruit, peel and all.

in northern climates Jerusalem artichokes are something that are pretty easy to grow and propagate on their own.
Anywhere you are you need to know your climate. Learning how to keep your own seeds is important. Heirlooms.
