The real tragedy of Latin America wasn't that the Spanish despoiled a virgin paradise of El Dorado or wrecked a pristine lost world, it's that they built their colonial Empire on shaky foundations. Had Spain ignored the moronic wars of religion in Europe and focused more of it's efforts on developing their New World conquests and populating them with Spaniards rather than deciding that Mestizo dregs were "good enough", LATAM would be the equal of Anglo-America, maybe even better. Argentina bloomed after independence from Spain because the Spanish neglected it and there weren't enough natives present to provide a base for a majority miscegenated population. It's only after the flow of European immigrants dried up and Argentina made the foolish decision to open it's borders to it's mestizo neighbors that it devolved into the cesspit we're familiar with today.
