They are too firmly embedded in the system, the government can't afford to kick them out because they don't have anywhere else to buy ammo and gear from. As these are for-profit companies, once their monopoly is secure they no longer need to be competitive and the focus shifts to bilking the customer for as much money as you can get away with for the minimum product or service, and in this case the customer is the american taxpayer. Why make 10,000 millions of 5 million dollars when you can make 1 missile cost 6 million dollars? Think of the profits!The pentagon has never passed an audit and frankly they've stopped even trying, so there's no accountability. They just had free reign to rape the taxpayer for overpriced garbage munitions that white box room theorycrafting promises you is the best shit ever but has no demonstrated real world benefit, and they've been doing it for decades.
