What we saw was "new variants" that had in some cases worse symptoms. We'd expect that to happen if someone was releasing these edited viruses in such a way that they were still dangerous like the specious jump or just engineered to be that way, and to also potentially bypass natural immunity (make enough changes so it looks different to the immune system). This isn't as difficult as people might think, you can easily sequence a coronavirus that's causing flus in humans and splice in changes for things like the spike protein and so on. In fact if you knew that's what the vaccines would be getting your immune system to target, you would in fact know to make this change.I'm not sure how well swineflu spread. I think the deliberate splicing of a flu-like virus means it could spread easier in the population.
