The thing is that if he did this to a black child, white people would still be happy he got the death penalty. However, if the driver was black and did this to the white girl, huge portions of the black community would argue that he was only being treated so harshly because of the racial dynamic. Black people reflexively go to bat for their own, which is commendable in some ways, but what ends up happening is that they bend over backwards justifying the actions of monsters in a way that white people just don't, but they'll say this one guy is representative of white people and the worst among them is never a representative of them -- in fact, what they did isn't that bad, actually.
