As soon as stores stopped offering bags, the plastic baskets were getting stolen in high volumes, to the point were stores had none. Large shopping carts were also getting stolen in high volumes. “Reusable bags” that the stores sold were also getting stolen. The stores started charging like $0.10 per bag for paper bags, and cheap “reusable bags”, but customers would take the bags at the self checkouts without paying for the bags, so the self checkouts stopped having any bags available.

The tax is charged at the distributor level, so stores are paying the tax whether the beverages sell, or get stolen, or spoil and get thrown down the drain. A 12oz beverage gets charged an extra $0.18 per beverage over the actual cost of the syrup. A 32oz beverage is getting charged almost $0.50 per cup. If a store has to add in extra percentages to cover breakage, spoilage, theft, etc., a McDonalds selling the average 1,600 to 1,700 Coca-Cola beverages per day that Google estimates, will have to shell out $320 - $850 per day just to cover the “Sweetened Beverage Tax”. The above is only for the Coke products. That amount is likely several or more times what an employee gets paid per shift.

I knew things had gone to shit when I tried to buy a pack of Fisherman's Friend at 7-11 and found out they keep them in a locked cabinet. I literally have to ask the paki clerk to walk around his counter, walk to the side of the store with him, wait for him to find the right key, watch him fiddle with the lock, tell him I want X-tra strength not regular 3 or 4 times until he grabs the right bag, wait for him to close and lock the door, wait for him to walk to the other side of the store and get behind the counter again, then have him ring it up, then pay.
