Former cop/fed, been off the job 10 years, great job but only if you really have it in your blood. These days it’s probably not as fun, we didn’t have body cams, gps, etc when I was in patrol. I had my own experience with coworkers who were too big of a pussy to back me on a complaint about a supervisor (muh pension) and as a civilian, seeing them blindly enforce illegal covid rules in blue states was a wake up call. That being said, the average cop isn’t looking to make a hundred arrests, write 1000 tickets or do do much anything that causes headaches. You cannot talk your way out of getting jammed up but you can talk your way into it. I’ve had a few interactions with cops since retired and they’ve all been decent, but it’s easier for me to spot when they are being lazy or don’t know what they’re talking about.

I spent my last two years on the Marshals fugitive task force in one of the shittiest cities in the country, but we rolled deep and used tactics so that I felt it was 100x less dangerous than being a park ranger or a cop in some rural area. 3x cops are killed in accidents vs. by criminals and that was more my fear (I was hit by a speeding car). You have to find your own rewards. You will come across people that do appreciate your help. I saw plenty of people I locked up who’d come up with a smile and say hi bc I wasn’t a douche.
