They don't teach people how to read anymore in school. My kindergartener comes home telling me how they split time between learning letters and sounds and just memorizing words like they're Chinese symbols. "The" is "the" because it looks like "the" logic. So my kindergartener will try to read something and just guesses what the word is based on how it looks not how it ought to sound. Really frustrating and retarded. This summer I'm teaching phonics myself because the school system.. this has to be malicious right? We've known the benefits of phonics for hundreds of years because that's how reading English was always taught!
