>Education tool Canvas, used by schools, colleges and universities for grades and other class materials, was hacked, blocking students from accessing the application, multiple college student newspapers reported on Thursday.
>The Harvard Crimson reported that students could not gain access to the site beginning on Thursday afternoon with hacking group ShinyHunters saying Harvard was among "thousands of schools allegedly affected by a breach of Instructure, Canvas' parent company."
>The Daily Pennsylvanian, the student newspaper for the University of Pennsylvania, said ShinyHunters in a message posted on Penn's Canvas page last week had said any university that did not wish to have its data released should contact the group before May 12.
>Duke University had also been affected by the hack that hit over 9,000 schools, its student newspaper, The Chronicle, said.

I’m a college professor. Shits fucked. I guess that’s why we DIVERSIFY OUR TOOLS.

Anyway, AMA I suppose.

>could go after banks, hedge funds, conglomerates, governments, etc. and make billions while actually fucking with people who deserve it
>instead constantly hack schools, hospitals, small businesses, charities, etc.
really makes you think...

>Shits fucked.
that's putting it mildly. i'm lucky, i'm an oldfag so i keep all my shit analog - physical gradebooks, handwritten assignments, i only put shit online when admin harasses me about it... but all our younger colleagues get it drilled into them every hour of every day by admin that they need to be using their LMS constantly, every student needs to be getting constant feedback and grades every time they so much as sneeze in lecture, and all their assignments need to be managed through the LMS and yadda yadda yadda, and now i get to go in to work next week, give my students their paper final exam, grade shit, and can just submit everything on paper to the college, while every instructor under 40 is about ready to fling themselves off a cliff.

Good, take all their ill begotten money
Fuck higher education

Bonus: it makes it more difficult for students to readily cheat by using AI, encouraging actual learning and retention of data(writing things down helps a lot!), not to mention visualization, mental tasks.

The university research and development labs are our most valuable and useful resource, for not only military industrial technology, but also medical, commercial tech(things have a tendency of being developed with off the shelf/private company’s components if possible), agriculture and more. They rely heavily on taxpayer funding, grants to survive, and cannot be allowed to fail in many ways.

Absolutely based.
>while every instructor under 40 is about ready to fling themselves off a cliff
It's going to be even funnier when the turn against AI content means that some decade's worth of drivel is considered useless.

What data was held for ransom? What could they have leaked?
If it was just their grades then that is literally of no importance unless you don't want people to find out you have a GPA of 0.5.
Maybe if it was private messages that'd be of some importance, but if you send anything sensitive through a fucking school network you deserve it.

i think they got everything on canvas. it would be hilarrious if they leak the test answers for 9000 schools and colleges
