Of course Folk music itself got commercialized and affected by pop music, so really it's just a genre that attempts to imitate what was once folk music, if that makes any sense. In the old days people would go out with recorders and literally just record people in small towns or on farmland to see what songs they naturally knew, that was representative of folk music. Some of that survives to this day and is still played as "country" music just with modern instrumentation.
