folk: https://youtu.be/3A3W5v1dNNI
country: https://youtu.be/84yy6rGF7GU

country is louder and has more instrumentation. folk is closer to traditional acoustic songs people have always played.

not as much as he supposedly did in the narrative where he even did it
there is a little tiny bit of it I can appreciate but I grew up associating it with the most insufferable kind of people, so it's this very tiny bit

country is commercialized and influenced by popular music

Folk is supposed to be more representative of the original music of regions or ethnic groups that hasn't been diluted as much by commercialization. Of course Folk music itself got commercialized and affected by pop music, so really it's just a genre that attempts to imitate what was once folk music, if that makes any sense.

In the old days people would go out with recorders and literally just record people in small towns or on farmland to see what songs they naturally knew, that was representative of folk music. Some of that survives to this day and is still played as "country" music just with modern instrumentation.

Here's an actual American folk song that dates back to England in like the 1600s.

Here's a country song

Both these songs were recorded in the 1940s so around the same time.

You can hear how country was more influenced by swing/jazz/blues
