Iran has thousands of 10 meter CEP ballistic missiles, which can be essentially launched from anywhere in Iran and sink a tanker. They have anchored and drift mines, drift mines which can be moved around the Gulf by changing their bouyancy to catch different currents. They have thousands of anti ship cruise missiles and launchers, which could sit anywhere along the length of their coast and pick targets. They have combat speedboats, which are set up in camouflaged berths along the coastline. Some of these are remotely controlled and carry a 300kg efp device that would rip straight through a carrier, let alone a tanker. They have one way attack drones that can go on a planned attack path or be remotely guided. They have undersea drones. They still have aircraft and helicopters. They have real time intelligence from commercial sources like keplr and marine traffic but also the Chinese imagery satellite they purchased, Russian sigint assistance, and their own rather adept intelligence apparatus, especially in the Gulf states. What the fuck do you expect America to do here? To stop the threat set Iran has deployed you have to completely conquer Iran, or at least control the first 150 km from the coast, meaning 5 million boots on the ground. That isn't happening. There is nothing that the US can do to make a strait transit an acceptable risk for the operators and insurers of the hundred of ships still in the Gulf. Trump will capitulate and hand Iran 4 billion dollars in frozen funds and end sanctions and even then he will still have to allow Iran to tax all transits. This was an entirely predictable situation and has been explained to every president by the intelligence agencies since like... Carter. Because it is a really, really tiny strait. The navigable channel through it is only about 2 miles wide, which means there that any defensive force in the strait has little maneuvering room, and that it's really easy to saturate it with mines. On top of this, the terrain on the Iranian side is mostly mountainous, which badly interferes with radar coverage. A supersonic missile coming over those mountains after using them to mask its approach could impact a target less than 10 seconds later. That is a very short engagement window, basically precluding the use of SAM. Normally USN fleet defense is heavily skewed toward beyond-the-horizon engagements, and if anything gets close enough for CIWS to engage it, that means someone fucked up very, very badly.
