European tradition of warfare is what emerged in the Middle Ages. Basically some nobles would squabble, raise an army. Eventually the losing side would sue for peace, some borders would change, some noble titles would change, and that would be that. The idea of "completely exterminating" the enemy, is an Old World mentality from the Bronze Age. It's what you find in the Bible. God tells the jews to exterminate their enemies. So the US actions in WW2, targeting civilians, killing everyone. That was a jewish mentality. Jews, one way or another, were behind that. The US also had this "burn it all down" attitude in the Civil War. I think in that case, the lesson was taken from Napoleon, who famously said "wars should be short and brutal".
