This is not just inherent but the very reason why such religions become world-spanning phenomenon. One should not begrudge the Pope for practicing his creed and one should not act surprised. Religions of the book replaced religions of the blood because they are more amenable to masses and mass society. The religions which are now supplanting Christianity et al (the various forms of state worship borne out of the 20th c) did so largely by offering an even wider tent. The ones which posited themselves as more exclusive fell away or were defeated (NS, fascism etc).The tl;dr is don't expect a cat to bark and don't expect a society which is materially based on absorbing whatever trash it can to extract some fiscal value (however small) to be in any way based.
